- Athens Women Raise the Roof
What is WRTR? It's actually pretty simple -- women from Athens County and the surrounding area made a commitment to "raise the roof" on a Habitat for Humanity home. This is an all-women project; women provide all the hands-on work on the home, but men can be involved in the training of building skills and in the care and feeding of the volunteers.WRTR has finished four homes so far. Fundraising for the fifth house will begin soon. New volunteers for WRTR will be trained to participate in the construction of the latest effort. Be sure to see their building update for up-to-date information on the house that is currently in progress. - Faith Build Coalition
The Faith Build Coalition of Athens County Habitat for Humanity was established in 1999. Since then more than 30 religious congregations have joined together to provide prayers, volunteer labor, and financial support. The coalition completed construction of its first house, on Salem Road, in 2001, and has subsequently completed other houses, a second in 2003 in Canaan Township, and a third in 2005 near Coolville.Beginning in 2003 the Coalition has raised funds and public awareness by selling concessions at Ohio U. men's basketball and football games. In fall 2005 it has started a new fundraising program--our "2x4s" program--by which people can become a part of Habitat houses by signing 2x4s (or 2x6s) that will go into a house. The Coalition's primary work is to put faith into action by working with partner families to provide affordable, decent housing in Athens County.
