Faith Build

The Faith Build Coalition of Athens County Habitat for Humanity has had several fund-raising projects in recent months and it is time to catch you up on what has been happening.

On April 26 we held a rummage sale at Christ the King.  We had generous donations and lots of people shopping.  The total receipts were $968 plus change, easily the most successful rummage sale we have ever had.  Thanks to all who donated items or dropped in to shop.

On May 31 we held a scrap metal drive at the county fairgrounds.  That proved to be quite successful also, with receipts of $1,677.  It helped that rates for scrap metal had risen a lot since our last drive.  It was nice to see lots of familiar faces turning out with their loads of scrap metal, especially the offerings of aluminum, brass, and copper.

On June 3 we held the drawing on the quilt raffle.  The quilt had been generously donated to us in March by the Piece Lovers Quilt Guild of Athens.  The quilt traveled around to county libraries for three months, giving lots of people a chance to see it up close.  The winning ticket in the drawing was purchased by Mrs. Darla Perry of Athens.  Total sales of tickets for the raffle came to $1,025.

We are grateful for all your support in these projects.  All these funds will go toward construction of the next Habitat house for a partner family.

AND THE WINNER IS

Darla Perry won the Log Cabin quilt.  Her name was drawn on June 3 during the Faith Relations Committee meeting.  This is a picture of Darla receiving her quilt from Danny Moates, Joyce Lambert and George Bain.

THE FAITH BUILD -- CASSELS HOME

Regular Work days: Fridays (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) It is best for the Site Supervisor if you are scheduled so that he or she has a head count of how many workers they will have that day.  However, you are still welcome to drop by the site as you are able to volunteer your time.  If you can only schedule a half day (8 – noon or noon – 4), please let Brandi know.  If the weather looks questionable and you’re not sure that building will be going on, please call the Habitat Office at 592-0032 to confirm the day’s schedule. *Unless you hear otherwise, lunches will NOT  be provided and you should bring your own.*

Directions to 210 St. John’s St.: Take US 33 West to Nelsonville;  go right on Grosvenor Street;  left on Poplar Street;  right on St. Charles Street;  left on Church Street;  and right on St. John Street.  210 will be on your right.   Carpooling is highly recommended.  Parking space at the site is limited.  If you are interested in this, please make arrangements with fellow volunteers or contact Brandi and she will try to arrange some carpools if there are enough interested parties.  Since this is a winter build and offices are closed Saturday and Sunday, meeting at the Habitat office on West Union Street is a good central location from which to leave.

Liability Forms:  A "Waiver of Liability and Photo Release" must be on file before you begin work at the site. If you fill one out prior to working, please take the form to the site with you to turn in.  If you have not received one prior to your arrival on site, we do have them available for you at the build.

Safety and First Aid:
Every precaution will be taken to provide a safe working environment. Safety guidelines will be posted at the work site.  A first aid kit will be at the site at all times for minor cuts and scrapes.  Suggested clothes to wear are hard soled shoes (no sandals, open toed shoes, or flip-flops), comfortable, grubby long pants and warm, but breathable shirts.  BRING SUNSCREEN, HAT, AND A JUG OF ICE WATER EACH TIME YOU WORK.  Please remember that you can get sunburned and dehydrated, even in the winter.
