Athens County Habitat for Humanity
Athens Women Raise the Roof

What is Athens Women Raise the Roof?
AWRTR is a Habitat for Humanity (HFH) campaign which provides an environment where women can comfortably learn building skills they might not otherwise have the opportunity to acquire.  AWRTR began its first house in Glouster on June 10, 2000. The Rhodes family moved into their new home in January 2001. Our second home, in Nelsonville, was underway by April 2003 and was dedicated in June 2004. House #3 began with a "blitz build" in June 2005 . The home, also in Nelsonville, was ready for the family in 2006. Our fourth home (and third in  Nelsonville) was started in July of 2007 and completed in December 2007.

What's new in 2010?  2010 is a fundraising year.  We are looking for a few good committee members to help with fundraising events and preparation for the next build.  If you're interested contact Debra McBride at [ email ].  We dedicated our 5th house on December 6, 2009.  Pictures from the dedication are included on the build update page. Pictures showing the progress of the 2009 build are included at the bottom of this page.   We will post future volunteer activities as they arise here and on the build update page. Our annual golf outing is scheduled for Saturday, May 1, 2010. Click here for the team registration form.  Order forms for our annual flower sale will be available soon, with pick-up scheduled for Sunday, May 2, 2010.  Details on these and our fundraising activities are included below.

Social Events
First Friday Social - Join us the first Friday of most months at 5:30 p.m.  First Friday Social for March is scheduled for Friday March 5 at Abrio's Brick Oven at 859 E. State Street. When dates or locations change, we will post them here.

Fundraising
HFH homes in Athens County cost about $80,000 to build. Volunteer labor and donated materials help keep costs low. Each HFH house is sold at no profit to a family in need. The cost of the home is repaid by a no interest mortgage over a fixed period of time. These payments are then recycled to build more houses in Athens County.  AWRTR holds a variety of events to raise money to begin our builds.

Annual Golf Scramble
Our seventh annual Golf Scramble is scheduled for Saturday, May 1, 2010.  Click here for the team registration form.

Annual Flower Sale
The annual flower sale order forms will be available soon with pickup scheduled for May 2, 2010.  Please support WRTR by ordering flowers and/or helping to volunteer with the sale.

Beer, Brats and Blues
Beer, Brats & Blues was held on September 12.  Thanks to Marietta Brewing Company for the microbrews and King Family Farms for the brats.

NEW!  Kroger Cares Program/Kroger Gift Cards
For more than four years, you have helped to support the build activities of Athens Women Raise the Roof every time you used your Kroger Gift Card to purchase groceries. The 5% of your Kroger bill has been a terrific, passive fund-raising tool for WRTR. As of May 1, 2009, Kroger is replacing the Kroger Cares program with one that uses just your Kroger Plus card instead of a specially designated Kroger gift card. To maximize the returns on your shopping, you will need to register your account.  You will need to spend down your current WRTR Kroger gift card before May 1st.
